Room by Room: How One Small Swap Transformed My Shower (And Why I’m Loving Shampoo Bars!)

I’m always looking for ways to live a little more sustainably. But let’s be honest: trying to overhaul your entire house to be eco-friendly all at once is exhausting and overwhelming. I’ve found that the best way to tackle it is by taking a “one room at a time” approach.

I’ve been standing in each room of our house, looking around with fresh eyes, and asking myself a simple question: Where are we unnecessarily using single-use plastic here, and how can we make this space just a little bit greener? And while that is definitely still ‘work in progress’ when I walked into our shower room, the answer was staring right back at me from the ledge: a sea of plastic shampoo bottles.

The Results Are In!

Remember the Big Plastic Count 2024 back in March? My personal results, with my households plastic packaging footprint, and the overall results are in, from 225,000 participants. And they are STAGGERING.

Such a lot of data to crunch and analyse. Were there enough contributors to get credible results I can hear you ask? Well, participation was 1 in every 300 people in the UK – that seems a significant enough number to give a pretty good overview of not just how much plastic households are throwing away, but in which categories.

Can you guess which of these had the highest plastic count: Food & Drink, Cleaning & Toiletries and Everything Else? Any idea how much of our plastic is incinerated?
