If you’ve been following my journey for a while, you know that my heart beats a little faster whenever we talk about South Georgia. This rugged, wind-swept UK Overseas Territory is often called the “Serengeti of the Southern Ocean,” and for good reason. It is a land of superlatives – home to millions of fur seals, towering albatrosses and those iconic – and personally my favourites! – bustling king penguin colonies.
But as a Trustee of the South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT), I know that beauty requires vigilance. Nature is resilient, but it isn’t invincible.
That is why I am so thrilled to share our latest mission: South Georgia WildCounts.
From Restoration to Revelation
Many of you may have heard about the monumental Habitat Restoration Project. No? Well it’s an incredible story of how SGHT and their US counterpart Friends of the South Georgia Island, raised £10million and successfully cleared the island of invasive rodents, allowing native ground-nesting birds to return to the shores in peace. It was a historic win for conservation. Read the whole story HERE.
However, “success” isn’t a static point. To truly protect this ecosystem, we need to understand exactly how it is recovering. We know the birds are back, but how many? Where are the new hotspots? Which of our whales are recovering the quickest and how are their populations shifting as the climate changes?
South Georgia WildCounts is the vital next chapter. It’s the data-driven “pulse check” the island needs.
Why Now? The Data Gap
Fieldwork in the sub-Antarctic is, to put it mildly, a logistical jigsaw puzzle. It’s expensive, it’s cold, and it’s remote. Because of these challenges, some of our population estimates for key species are now decades out of date.
We are currently facing a “perfect storm” of emerging threats:
- Climate Change: Impacting ice cover and nesting sites.
- Avian Influenza: A terrifying new reality for bird colonies.
- Vessel Traffic: Increasing human presence requires smarter management.
- Krill Stocks: The microscopic engine of the Southern Ocean that sustains everything from penguins to blue whales.
To manage the island’s protected areas effectively, both on land and at sea, we can no longer rely on guesswork. We need precision.

The Solution: High-Tech Hope
In 2025, SGHT brought together 60 international scientists to map out a strategy. The result is a collaborative monitoring programme that feels like something out of a sci-fi novel. We are moving beyond just “boots on the ground” to include:
- Drones: For non-invasive, high-resolution counts of sprawling colonies.
- Satellite Imagery: Monitoring remote beaches from space.
- Remote Cameras: Capturing year-round data in places humans can’t easily reach.
By sharing this data internationally, we aren’t just helping South Georgia; we are contributing to the global understanding of our planet’s health.
A Huge Thank You: The Big Give
We’ve just wrapped up our participation in The Big Give week to kickstart the fundraising for WildCounts. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated. Your contributions are literally fueling the boats and powering the drones that will safeguard this wilderness.
As a Trustee, I see the passion that goes into every project SGHT undertakes. But more importantly, as someone who loves the natural world, I see the hope that WildCounts represents. We are moving from a history of exploitation to a future of informed, compassionate stewardship.
The counts are coming. The science is ready. And the wildlife is waiting.
Stay tuned for more updates as we head into the field!

Join the Guardians: Shaping the Future of South Georgia
Becoming a Guardian of the South Georgia Heritage Trust is like joining a team of real-life superheroes protecting a piece of paradise! At least, that’s my perception. The Trust works to preserve and protect South Georgia’s unique environment and historical sites. By becoming a Guardian, you’re directly contributing to their efforts to conserve this incredible place helping to fund vital conservation projects, research initiatives, and educational programs. This includes the creation of the Commensalis sculpture, a stunning memorial to the island’s whaling history and its marine life. So, by becoming a Guardian, you’re not just donating; you’re actively shaping the future of South Georgia and supporting a truly inspiring project.
You join me as a Guardian by gifting as little as £10 a month for 12 months either for yourself or for someone else – just choose your team, whether that’s ‘Chinstrap’, ‘Gentoo’ or ‘King’ or join team ‘Albatross’ with a lifetime membership. All you need to know is HERE.
