Beyond Bricks and Mortar: ‘That Hempcrete Guy’ Reveals the Carbon-Negative Building Solution We Already Have!

Regular readers here know I’m passionate about exploring sustainable solutions, from the food we eat to the energy we use as well as uncovering those unexpected sustainability individuals. In the UK, we’re facing a dual challenge: creating warmer, healthier homes and significantly reducing our carbon footprint. The good news? We have the skills, tools and materials readily available to achieve both, particularly through sustainable building practices. The frustrating part? For some reason, we’re still not utilising these incredible resources, especially when it comes to larger-scale housing developments.

I recently had a fascinating conversation that opened my eyes and really brought this home. My guest, Will Stanwix a.k.a. ‘That Hempcrete Guy’, a pioneer in the world of natural building, shared his journey and insights, highlighting just how much potential we’re sitting on. Another unsung hero quietly championing the use of carbon-negative hempcrete to revolutionise eco-friendly construction and reduce humanity’s environmental footprint.

Beyond the Tap: Your Hidden Water Footprint

If you’re anything like me, you probably thought you had a handle on your household water usage. Prepare to have your mind blown! That’s how I felt when we kicked off our nearly last Transition Streets module about water.

We all know about the obvious ways we use water at home – showers, toilets, washing up and laundry. But did you know that your personal “water footprint” is likely far greater than the 150 litres per person per day we typically use in our homes? According to the module notes, the average water footprint is a staggering 3,400 litres per day! Here’s why….

Love Food, Reduce Footprint: Diving into the Transition Streets Food Module

If you consider that around 25% of global carbon emissions come from food and agriculture it’s an area where we can have considerable impact on our planet… and on our own health too. But there are so many factors to consider when you start a conversation about the food we buy, from our dietary needs, cooking skills and the time we have, through to cost, environmental impact and animal welfare.

We delved deep into the sometimes daunting world of food at our latest Transitions Street meeting and got stuck into some vital conversations about how we nourish ourselves and our planet.

‘Resourceful’ Living on Our Street

Back with another update from our ongoing Transitions Street journey. This time, we’ve been tackling the “Resource Use” module, and let me tell you, it’s been eye-opening! But what exactly do you mean by ‘resource use’, I can hear you ask?

STUFF!!

Let’s be honest, we’re all surrounded by stuff. Sometimes, it feels like we’re drowning in it! We’re bombarded with adverts telling us we need the latest gadget, the newest clothes, the “must-have” car accessory to be happy. But is it really true?

This module challenged us to rethink our relationship with the things we buy, use, and ultimately, throw away. Here’s what we learnt and our action list …

It’s All About the Bees – The Iconic Chewton Glen Hotel (Part 1)

Inspiring the Next Generation

Chewton Glen is a glorious and luxurious place to stay, set in 135 acres of beautiful rolling grounds.

Would it surprise you that what excited me most was a tour around their waste management area by their very informed Deputy General Manager, Raymond de Toulouse Lautrec? Probably not by now…. just to prepare you for my ‘bin’ conversation!

But what’s this about the bees? My Dad was an avid gardener and I have fond memories of helping him tend our good sized garden of vegetables and flowers as a little girl. Everything was grown from seed, kept from the previous year. Plant cuttings and vegetable gluts were shared with neighbours as were gardening tips on what to grow with what to keep the bugs in check. Everything that could be was composted. He taught me all I know and his presence is always with me when I garden – not surprising, so many of my plants are from him!

My conversation with the Estate Manager, Darren Venables stirred those memories and really got me thinking about all that Darren told me he was trying achieve….

Landaa Happy Eggs

… multi-international chickens, beautiful gardens build staff moral

Sustainable Tourism at Four Seasons Maldives Series, 7 of 7

I am ‘shouting out’ about resorts where I can see they are truly focussed on leaving the world better than they found it.

A fun topic for this last in the series, but still has purpose. Four Seasons have a very rounded approach, its not just the environment they have a commitment to but people as well and they are well known for the emphasis they put on their staff welfare.  Here is a little insight into one of the staff areas at Landaa Giraavaru and how they came to have Landaa Happy Eggs!

Eliminating R22 Gas…

… and a 22% energy saving

Sustainable Tourism at Four Seasons Maldives Series, 6 of 7

I am ‘shouting out’ about resorts where I can see they are truly focussed on leaving the world better than they found it.

Always looking for ways of becoming more energy efficient, essential air conditioning for the staff quarters, installed over 14 years ago was a potential advocate for significant savings. But a considerable undertaking when you consider they have approx 450 permanent staff plus external third party staff to accommodate.
